An acquisition from the north.

I’ve almost always worked with construction-related products. In Svenljunga, I worked at Blåkläder, also as product manager, developing a new range of shoes and gloves. When the family grew, however, it became almost impossible for me to commute from Skåne. I contacted Thomee at just the right time when a position as product manager became vacant. Somehow it was meant to happen. It’s just over two years since I started and the pandemic has of course characterized this period, but I’ve had great support from the very beginning.

“My Dalecarlian accent is still quite distinct, and since I’m from Leksand, the hockey team is of course very important. I played ice hockey myself until I was 14-15 years old.”

My Dalecarlian accent is still quite distinct, and since I’m from Leksand, the hockey team is of course very important. I played ice hockey myself until I was 14-15 years old, which was enough to make me still feel the need to watch all their games on TV. Exercise has always been important, a way to cleanse and recharge mind and body. In addition to hockey and a lot of other sports, I got hooked on rowing in my teens. An interest that I took up when we moved to Helsingborg. Me and seven guys actually competed in the Swedish Championships in a category called 8. With a little luck, I now have time to train two or three times per week.

Building a house is similar to the job of building a strong product range, how did you arrive at that analogy?

Although I’ve worked closely to the construction sector, I’ve had very little experience of building with my own hands. It’s not that I’m all thumbs, but it has just not happened. But after we bought a small, dilapidated guest house in Lerberget south of Höganäs, my interest has grown. And it’s very inspiring. We have added new parts to the small house, which has become almost twice as big. We have stuck to the old style that characterizes the neighborhood, and one of the neighbors actually said that it looks like the new house is older than the old one, which we think is a great approval of our work. The entire project would most likely have been qualified for SVT’s Husdrömmar (“House Dreams”), with a not entirely straightforward construction process. Many small and large decisions must be made and coordinated in a short time, even though you think you have planned everything well. Of course, we had help with all the big things, but interior-wise we’ve done a lot ourselves.

Being a product manager in a wholesale company is quite similar to that construction process, I think. You must thrive at a high pace, handle several things simultaneously and keep the process going. And most importantly, you must trust the teamwork. Pass the pucks within the company, to purchasing, marketing, logistics and so on. At work, I’m probably mostly the analytical Fredrick. I like to ruminate on things before I make a decision, and that also means that my gut feeling is included in the process. After all, we at the company must live with these decisions for a long time.

How do you defend the role of intermediary between manufacturer and reseller, as the wholesaler is?

At Thomee, we work mostly with external brands, and development takes place close to the suppliers. If our role as intermediary is to be justified, it’s about refining, being ahead, seeing and analyzing buying patterns at the consumer level and finding profitability in warehousing and logistics that benefits our customers. Of course, customers sometimes choose to go directly to the manufacturer, but they usually realize that it’s not profitable in the long run, and that we add more value than initially evident. But we are confident in our concept, and it has worked well for 130 years.
